Last Trip Highlights - The West Country Caper!
Great things were in store for us on the 2nd Mystery Tour to England. Every day was packed full of Mystery and History and Interesting Places.
Just an overview of the trip:
Oct. 4: After being picked up at Gatwick Airport, our first stop was the Jane Austen House at Chawton. We had a special lecture and tour. Then on to Bath where we had a nice dinner and a ghost walk! (Read the Peter Diamond series by Peter Lovesey). B,D
Oct. 5: Today we visited the Bookbinder's Museum , where there were first editions of several Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books. We toured Number 1 Crescent Circle, visited 700 year-old Lacock Village then had tea at Sheldon Manor, the "Great House" in Persuasion. This was an event to remember as the Lady of the House, Mrs Elsie Gibbs, served us homemade tea cakes on 17th century dishes and related a true story of conspiracy and murder... Tonight we were entertained by another of Bath's famous guides. B, T, D
Oct. 6: We started the day at 12th century Wells Cathedral, with a private guided tour. Next stop, the tiny town of Dunster location of BBC Hercule Poirot movies. Sitting at the edge of Exmoor, and dominated by Luttrell Castle, Author Hazel Holt will met us here and took us for a tour of the moors. We stopped for cream tea and gave Mrs Holt a chance to chat about her books. Then back to Luttrell Arms hotel and a West Country dinner. B, T, D
Oct. 7: After enjoying the morning in Dunster, we headed out for a pub lunch at the Hood Arms in Kilve, an old smugglers village. One of them left their parrot at the pub-he repeats complete phone conversations! Fall is time for the cider production so we stopped at a real cider farm. Free tastings! We had just enough time to see Montecute House and Gardens where Sense & Sensibility was filmed, before arriving in Torquay, home of Agatha Christie. B,L,D
Oct.8: Today was Agatha Christie Day. Our guide for the day was Mrs Jean Nott, the world renown expert on this famous author. She led us on a complete Agatha Christie tour of the area. We had lunch at the Churston Inn where Mrs Christie always had Sunday lunch. We loved the story that came with this charming old inn that traces its history back to Saxon times. A special place awaited us for dinner. B, L, D
Oct. 9: The mysterious Dartmoor was our destination today. We visited the 800 year old Clapper bridge, built entirely of stone. Conan Doyle wrote Hound of the Baskervilles in Princetown where we saw the Sherlock Holmes display and museum. After a fortifying pub lunch, we took an authentic letterbox moor walk. (See Dartmoor Burial by Audrey Peterson). While in the area we drove by the infamous Dartmoor Prison, but no visits allowed! Of course, dinner was very special tonight. B,L,D
Oct. 10 We drove along the coastal area today, including through the village of Lyme Regis where the French Lt. Woman was filmed. For lunch we stopped at the smallest inn in England, and had a chance to visit with the publican, a retired jockey who rode with Dick Francis. We had a photo opportunity at Cerne Abbas when we stopped to see the Giant. Next stop was the Wilton House, a beautiful manor house that has been used in numerous movies, including Sense and Sensibility. One last pub dinner then a good nights sleep before catching our planes home tomorrow. B,L,D
This is just a brief summary of our trip. Other special events, guest speakers, good meals and interesting stories were on the agenda. You were given a reading list of mysteries to read that correspond with our itinerary of the West Country. The group size was limited to only 20 participants which allowed us to visit some unique places and to take advantage of opportunities that might come our way.
Our hotels were hand-pcked to fit our theme. Most meals and all entry fees were included.
